A square rainwater system is slightly more modern style than the half round plastic guttering you see on most properties built before the 1960s. The square system has a larger flow capacity than the 112mm half round system.

Fitting downpipes

When it comes to installing downpipes, it’s likely to be one of the last steps in your overall installation – and the good news is, it’s quick and easy.

Your fascia is likely to sit proud of the wall you’re going to secure your pipe to – so it’s likely that you’ll need to use angles to bring the pipe close to the wall. When you’ve picked the angles that will create the stack needed, the push-fit design means they’ll all just slot together without the need for any weld or fixings.

It’s important that you place a bracket clip close to the connection between your bend and your downpipe section – then space following brackets in roughly 1.8m intervals down the wall. There’s not going to be a lot of lateral force applied to your downpipe – so it doesn’t need bracketing quite as robustly as your guttering runs.

With your downpipe cut to the appropriate length, you’ll be able to run it straight into the underground drainage – or use a downpipe shoe to direct the flow.
